Women’s HIV/AIDS Community Development Coordinator
Full-time (35 hours weekly)
Salary Range: $41,500 to $47,999
Regional HIV/AIDS Connection (RHAC) is a volunteer driven, non-profit, community-based organization serving London and the six surrounding counties – Perth, Huron, Lambton, Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford. We are community- inspired and dedicated to positively impacting the lives of individuals and diverse communities living with, at-risk for or affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. Our philosophy includes adherence to The Ontario Accord/GIPA (Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS), anti-racism/anti-oppression, sex positivity, principles of harm reduction, holistic health and civil society.
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION AND ROLE
The Women’s HIV/AIDS Community Development Coordinator reports to the Director of Education. This role works within RHAC’s catchment to build local capacity in response to women’s HIV/AIDS prevention needs and to improve the quality of life for women living with or affected by, or at increased systemic risk for HIV/AIDS. The key areas of focus for this position include community development and community education and training.
Responsibilities
- Conduct site-based and events-based outreach among diverse communities of women living with/affected by/at increased systemic risk of HIV acquisition to engage with women with lived experience and identify needs, trends, concerns and directions for services/programming, through a community-development lens
- Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to develop effective programming and services and coordinated approaches that reduce/eliminate barriers women face in relation to service access
- Provide workshops and presentations related to HIV/AIDS and other STBBIs, sexual health, harm reduction, sex work, food insecurity, housing status, mental health and gender-based violence, child apprehension, and pregnancy/childbirth/infant feeding, among other themes to build knowledge and capacity among service providers that engage, support and strive to empower women
- Coordinate and participate in relevant community events
- Engage with relevant community committees
- Conduct data collection and analysis related to campaign delivery, events, and outreach activities to fulfil reporting requirements and inform program development/delivery/evaluation
- Other duties, as required
Required Skills
- Intercultural awareness and a nuanced understanding of anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices and philosophies – including feminist and queer perspectives
- Understanding of/experience with harm reduction-based philosophies and practice related to sexual health, substance use and sex work
- Current and extensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS, Hep C, and other STBBIs (sexually transmitted and blood- borne infections) in relation to the social determinants of health
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills to the practical aspects of the job by utilizing community development models/approaches to affect change that are sensitive to issues of diversity
- Strong program development, delivery and evaluation skills, including written and oral communication, ability to build rapport, conflict resolution and crisis intervention
- The ability to engage with and relate to culturally, linguistically, ethnically, spiritually, racially and geographically diverse communities of female-identified persons
- The ability to identify and understand intersectional factors that impact the health and wellbeing of diverse communities of women
- Experience providing one-on-one education, information, referrals and appropriate supports for individuals experiencing challenges related to mental health, housing, poverty, racism, ableism, immigration status/non- status, classism, ageism, homo/bi/transphobia, misogyny, gender-based violence and other factors that impact HIV acquisition
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years working in HIV/AIDS, Hep C and STBBI prevention, health promotion; thorough understanding of HIV/AIDS, Hep C and other STBBIs, safer sex, sex work and harm reduction principles and practices
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities
- Diploma or undergraduate degree in social services or equivalent related experience in social or health services
- Understanding of, and experience working with, diverse communities of women (including, but not limited to: cis women, trans women, women with experiences of transition, 2-Spirit people and queer women).
- Advanced computer skills including, but not limited to, the following: Microsoft Office Suite programs, data management software, digital/social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
- A valid driver’s license and consistent/regular access to a reliable vehicle for work-related duties
- Able to work irregular hours, including occasional evenings and weekends in a variety of social and physical settings
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Positions Screening (Police Vulnerable Sector Check)
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing culturally relevant, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, queer and trans-affirming services, preferred
- Lived experience that may be relevant to the position’s focus on sexual health, harm reduction, substance use, sex work and diverse communities of women, preferred
- Excellent communication (verbal, written, and visual) and negotiation skills, preferred
- Familiarity and comfort working in diverse venues where women connect, preferred
- Crisis intervention skills, preferred
